Most likely you are here because you have already started the game, if not welcome there will be information for you as well. After you complete the tutorials, and you should do them! You will be left to your own devices, EVE online is a sandbox MMO this means that there is no real path for you to follow its open ended. Unlike most MMO's EVE online dose not have a level system, no classes and the economy is player driven. I am going to touch on a few important points here and also share some helpful links for you to learn more to the side that will deal with things more in depth like the Isk Guide it has a ton of information for new and old players alike.
Finding your place in New Eden Now where to go after you completed the basic tutorial and are left to your own devices. There are a ton of things to do you can go anywhere, do anything be who you want to be. First and foremost the thing you want to do is have fun and make friends don't worry about making isk too much. Ask for help in the player help channel and the NPC corp channel you start in. Most of the time people in them will be helpful. Try everything and see what you like to do, there are a wide variety of things to do in eve like faction warfare, industry (which includes; mining, manufacturing and research), Exploration, PvP and more. Most of the skills do not take that long to train in order to try something out and if you don't like mining you don't have to do it. Point is find something you like doing. One of the best things you can do is to get into a player run corporation, it is similar to a guild from other games. (although never say looking for guild in eve you will receive flack for it.) You can look through the NeoCom at all the corporations there are and apply to them. However you should find a corp that is sorted to your needs or what you are interested in, read their description and be careful not everyone is friendly in eve and some will try to scam you so never give anyone isk or items in order to be a part of a corporation. If you want to have a lot of help learning the game and have guidance there are corporations that help new players out. a few to look into is EVE University, Hard Rock University and Noob Mercs. Skills Sense there are no levels or class system in EVE your skills are very important, they will be required to pilot ships, use weapons, modules as well as other things. Skills are learned through a time biased system where you set one skill to train over a period of time. You can set up to 24 hours worth of skill training. A good idea before training your skills is to look into the Certificate Planer and also look at ships that you might want to pilot in the near future. This will give you an idea of what skills you would need to train to become proficient at using the ship you want to fly. There are some programs that will help you organize and set up a training schedule EVEMon and EVEHQ are two of them. There are also several smart phone app's as well. Player Combat, Security status and Aggression Timer First thing is to understand some of the rules behind player verses player combat. You can and will be attacked anywhere anytime you are undocked there are however consequences in doing so though. There are rules set up in game that govern this and I will go over them to help you understand how and what they are and how the aggression timer works and when you can attack someone with out penalties being given to you. also you should set up your overview where you can see people's security status and standings toward you, if you are unsure how to use your overview check out the overview guide. The universe of New Eden is set up into sectors with security ratings. The security ratings range from 1.0 to -0.1 ratings. You will start off in a High security system, high security systems are ones that have a security rating of 1.0 to 0.5 and are patrolled by Concord(NPC police) that help protect players in high sec, although like real polices sometimes they don't show up in time. Low security space is 0.4 - 0.1 where there will be no protection give here by Concord. Null Security space 0.0 to -1.0 often called Null Sec or 0.0 space. Player security status plays a big part with the system security as well. You can gain and loose security status. Ways to gain it is to kill NPC pirates or rats that spawn in asteroid belts or by doing missions for NPC corporations. There are a lot of ways to loose security status mostly by committing acts of crime like destroying or attacking a Concord or faction Law enforcement craft, killing players in their ships and pods. Depending on your security status you might be restricted to specific parts of space, below is a handy list showing what systems you can be in depending on security status.
Criminal Flagging system and the Aggression Timer are a set of rules used to identify when some one becomes criminally flagged towards other players and who has permission to do what after aggression has been established. The Aggression Timer is used in Empire space which is 1.0 to 0.1 security status area's. Like with your Security status you can be flagged a criminal for committing acts of crime like destroying or attacking a Concord or faction Law enforcement craft, killing players in their ships and pods, Looting items from a players wrecks floating in space and by adding other players by using beneficial module on another player which will cause you to inherit their flag. When a player is Flagged as a criminal toward you they can be attacked by you or any other player they are flagged against without losing standing or Concord intervention. When someone commits a crime and are flagged they have a aggression timer stays active for at least 15 minutes after the last criminal activity. If someone you attack who has a criminal flag they can attack you back and do have a 1 minute timer that prevents docking or jumping same as the aggression timer. Also when flagged as a criminal you will have a icon of a white skull on a red square on your portrait and next to your ship in space indicating to those you wronged that you can be shot. *If you have a jet can (a cargo container jettisoned from your ship) someone can place an item in it and then move items from your can of their own and if you try to take back your items you will be flagged as a criminal. PVP Now that you know how the aggression timers work and criminal flagging we can talk about PvP! You can start to pvp not long after you create your character, you don't need to have years worth of skills to do so. There are also several different types of pvp in eve online. Factional warfare, corporation wars, ganking, null sec alliance pvp, Small gang and Blobs are all types of pvp you will encounter. Factional warfare is a open conflict between the four main empires. You can join a militia of a faction of your choice (depending on standings) and battle it out for control over systems. Joining a militia restricts parts of the galaxy you can enter depending on which faction you join and your allies. Corporation wars are another form of pvp where two waring corps can battle each other. until one wins. Null sec alliance pvp is the most know pvp. In null sec alliances battle over star systems gaining control over then and creating their own empires. Some types of pvp are solo pvp where a player goes around searching for a fight they can take on solo. suicide ganking is where a player will kill another by any means even if they die to make a profit or to destroy the other persons ship, it is a type of piracy. Small gang pvp is just what it sounds like a group of 5 to 10 players roaming around looking for a fight. Blob's are large groups of players that roam around killing almost everything it encounters due to the size of the group. Exploration You can start exploring at the very start of the game, when you are able to use probes you can scan down hard to find sites that hold valuable items. If you decide to go into a wormhole be careful it is just like null sec and Sleepers are not to be trifled with. Bring extra probes as well, it is no fun being stranded in a wormhole. Check out the exploration guide for more information on probing and exploration. If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to let me know ether by commenting on related blog post or by contacting me in game or email, both listed on the about page. |
