This morning I watched the successful launch of the
Skywardsphere around 12GMT. CCP with the help of students of the University of Reykjavík launched eve players into space via a high altitude balloon into the stratosphere, it was launched just north of CCP HQ. The balloon included a replica EVE pod that holds the names of players along with video, GPS and other devices.
The stream started just before the launch. I joined in on twitter
@KitsunebiSolRay for the action. They seemed to have three video feeds one was of the rooftop with a lot of CCP employee's and the harbor, one was the camera mounted to the balloon and a cell phone camera ("
Siminn who is partnering with us in this adventure is providing us with live video feed and GPS tracking via their 3G network and Samsung Note."). The feed of the Harbor and rooftop were high-quality and the one on the balloon was pretty good as well. The cell however was not so good, the feed kept breaking up and were unable to hear what was being said most the time due to background noise and wind, which was unfortunate although for a phone streaming to 100's possibly 1000's of people it could had been worse. Everyone watched as the Employees gathered on the roof and saw bits and peaces of the preparation for launching the Pod shaped craft into space.
I watched as the glorious pod took flight and made its way above the clouds, then higher and higher I was astonished to see the curve of the earth then space!, I was playing eve at the time so I was chatting with some alliance mates I looked back to the feed and the pod was gone!!! well we watched the balloon descend and finally the feed cut off when the balloon was very near the target lake. It was an awesome experience to watch live feed from a balloon travle up into space and back again. Check out the retreved photo's from
CCP's FaceBook page.
